A blast devastated Beirut on Tuesday, leaving dozens dead and thousands injured, while parts of the city were completely destroyed. The cause of the explosion is being investigated, but preliminary reports suggest 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive chemical material, were stored at a port warehouse without due safety measures.

The port of Beirut is in ruins following a deadly explosion on 4 August. At least 100 people perished and thousands were wounded. Nearly 300,000 local residents were left homeless as huge parts of the Lebanese capital were completely destroyed by the blast and shockwaves.

Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab has suggested that the devastating explosion occurred due to a huge stockpile of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive chemical material, being left in a warehouse for six years without due safety measures.
