Live Updates: Rescue Underway to Recover People Trapped by Second Avalanche in Eastern Turkey

A second avalanche in as many days occurred in Bahcesaray, a district of Van Province in eastern Turkey, burying a rescue team working to retrieve people trapped under an earlier avalanche.

According to initial reports from local medics, eight rescuers died under the snow slide, while up to 20 were believed missing.

 

The rescue team were responding to an earlier avalanche that buried a snow-clearing vehicle and a minibus at a highway near the town of Bahcesehir on Tuesday. As a result of the avalanche, five people were killed, and two were trapped.

Gülşen Orhan, originally from Van province, where the incident occurred, joined the rescue team to assess the situation. She is currently hospitalised but in a stable condition.

"As a result of the incident, 26 people were killed, including rescue workers, and 53 more were injured", Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said.

Governor Mehmet Emin Bilmez was quoted by DHA news agency as saying the retrieved bodies included nine civilians, eight gendarmerie officers, three village guards and a firefighter.
