Trump's pivotal decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israeli capital has elicited strong condemnation from Palestine, with Mahmud Abbas, its leader, warning of grave consequences for the peace process in the region.

Palestinian ambassador in Moscow Abdel Hafiz Nofal told Sputnik Friday that Palestine Palestine no longer considers the United States a mediator in the Middle East Quartet and is seeking new guarantors for the talks on resolution of the Palestine-Israel conflict.

According to the envoy, for the last 25 years the US has "privatized" the role of mediator, monopolizing the position and subsequently squeezing out opportunities for other countries to play their part and thus Palestine insists on the necessity "to reach new agreements in the peace process".

The statement comes in the wake of US President Donald Trump's Wednesday decision on the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and moving the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Before Trump oficially announced his intention Abdel Hafiz Nofal had warned the US that such move would "result in another intifada and lead to a deterioration of US relations with other Arab and Muslim states because the Arab world believes that Jerusalem belongs not only to the Palestinians but to all Muslim and Christian countries around the world".
