Supporters of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri gathered near his residence in Beirut on Independence Day, November 22 to celebrate his return from Saudi Arabia, where he earlier announced his resignation but later put his decision on hold.

Speaking before the crowd, Hariri said, "You’ve come from all over Lebanon to tell me: 'Thank God for peace.' I’ve come to tell you: 'Thank God for peace in Lebanon, for Lebanon, for the Lebanese people and for every one of you.'"

The Prime Minister also pledged to stay with his country and to continue his work to "protect stability" in Lebanon.

Hariri supporters told a Sputnik correspondent that they were glad that for now, Lebanon is peaceful and stable.

LEBANON: PEOPLE CELEBRATE RETURN OF THE PRIME MINISTER S. HARIRI TO THE COUNTRY

Saad Hariri announced his resignation in a video address from Saudi Arabia on November 4. He claimed that he fears sharing the fate of his late father, former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri, who was assassinated in 2005. He also accused Iran and the Hezbollah movement of attempting to destabilize the situation in Lebanon and the Middle East – a claim which Tehran has denied.

In response, Lebanese President Michel Aoun said he would not consider Hariri’s resignation until a personal meeting. Hariri did not return to Lebanon for several weeks, but arrived at an Independence Day military parade in the country earlier this week. In a televised speech after the parade, he said he had decided to "postpone" his decision, pending talks with the rest of the Lebanese government.
