An offensive of the Taliban (outlawed in Russia) on Afghan security service checkpoints left at least 31 people dead and twelve wounded on both sides in the southern Helmand province, local media reported Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to Khaama Press Agency, the coordinated Taliban attack took place on Tuesday night and at least two senior Taliban leaders were among those killed.

The Helmand province is the center of the Taliban’s drug trade and a major source of its revenue.

Afghanistan has long been suffering from unstable political, social and security situation due to the activity of the Islamic State terrorist group (banned in Russia) and the Taliban. The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces are currently conducting joint offensive operations to combat terrorism across the country.
