The Turkish parliament extended the state of emergency for 90 days the fourth time since it was first introduced after the failed coup attempt in July 2016, according to local media.

ANKARA (Sputnik) — The Turkish parliament on Monday approved a 90-day extension of the state of emergency for the fourth time since it was first introduced after the failed coup attempt in July 2016, Turkey's NTV television reported.

The Turkish government filed a request to the parliament earlier in the day to extend the state of emergency.

The Turkish opposition, as well as a number of EU leaders, have criticized the extension of the state of emergency, as this, in their view, threatens the rights and freedoms of the citizens of the country.
