At least two people were killed and 14 others wounded in a rocket strike by terrorists in a residential area in the Syrian city of Aleppo on Monday, a local police source told Sputnik.

DAMASCUS (Sputnik) — According to the source, terrorists opened fire from the al-Rashid in the neighborhood to the southwest of the city.

"Two people were killed and 14 wounded as a result of rocket shelling of New Aleppo. Some rockets exploded near a mosque," the source said.

The Syrian civil war has been raging for six years, with government forces fighting against both Syrian opposition groups who strive to overthrow President Bashar Assad, and numerous extremist and terrorist groups such as Daesh and Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, both of which are outlawed in Russia.

The city of Aleppo has become one of the main battlegrounds of the civil war in Syria. The city was liberated by the Syrian government forces in late 2016.
