Sherine Tadros, the head of Amnesty International’s UN office in New York, said that UN monitors should be allowed to investigate committed war crimes in Syria's Aleppo, not just to monitor the situation.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The UN Security Council resolution on monitoring evacuations from the northern Syrian city of Aleppo had to be adopted earlier and the United Nations should make the next step sending monitors to other regions of Syria, a prominent human rights group said Monday.

Earlier in the day, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution requiring the monitoring of evacuations from Aleppo.

"The world is watching how the UN responds to the plight of Aleppo. This important measure has come far too late, with hundreds of thousands of people demanding the Syrian and Russian governments allow a safe evacuation and independent monitoring. But thousands are still trapped in besieged areas of Eastern Aleppo, waiting for hours in sub-zero temperatures to be evacuated," Sherine Tadros, the head of Amnesty International’s UN office in New York, said.

She pointed out that UN monitors should be allowed to investigate committed war crimes, not just to monitor the situation.

"Now that it has finally agreed to act on Aleppo, the UN Security Council needs to build on this first step and urgently send monitors to all areas of evacuation, not just Aleppo," Tadros added.

On December 16, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that Aleppo was now under full government control with the Syrian army operation to retake the eastern districts completed. Civilians and militants were leaving the city amid a ceasefire agreement between the remaining pockets of resistance and government forces.
