MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Turkish police forces have caught 184 illegal migrants in the country’s northwestern Canakkale and southwestern Burdur provinces as they were trying to reach neighboring countries, local media reported Sunday.
According to the Anadolu news agency, Turkish district police captured 15 Afghans and 19 Syrians including women and children in Canakkale’s Bayramic district, when they were trying to illegally make their way to the Greek island of Lesbos.
Other 150 migrants mostly from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Syria and Somalia, were caught in Burdur’s Cavdir district, the agency said citing sources.
Two people were detained for helping the migrants in their journey.
Europe is currently facing a major refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of migrants attempting to reach wealthy EU member states through various routes, including via Italy, Greece, Turkey and the Balkan states. Despite Brussels' efforts to curb the migration influx, many people still continue attempts to reach the European Union.
