UN Refugee Chief Calls for Immediate Cessation of All Hostilities in E Aleppo
BERLIN (Sputnik) — German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier called on Saturday for lifting the blockade of evacuation of civilians from eastern Aleppo and said that Moscow, Tehran and Damascus should provide the city with the necessary level of security.

"FM Steinmeier on #Aleppo: The situation is desperate. Blockage of evacuation must be lifted immediately… The Syrian regime and its supporters in Russia and Iran must guarantee the safety of remaining people in #Aleppo and protect evacuations," the German Foreign Ministry said on its Twitter page.

On Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry's center for Syrian reconciliation said that the Syrian army's operation to liberate the eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo was over, and that the Syrian government troops were eliminating separate hotbeds of militant resistance. On the same day, the reconciliation center said that the operation to take militants and their families out of Aleppo had ended.

At the same time, media reports emerged that the evacuation of thousands of militants and civilians from the remaining militant-held districts had been suspended.

On Saturday, media reported that Ahrar al-Sham militants had agreed to withdraw from the eastern Aleppo in return for selective evacuation from the Syrian cities of Foah, Madaya and Zabadani.
