About 50,000 residents as well as up to 5,000 militants and their families may still remain in Syria's embattled city of Aleppo waiting to be evacuated to Idlib, UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said Thursday.

PARIS (Sputnik) — According to de Mistura, the numbers are approximate as many people in eastern Aleppo remain holed up in their homes.

"If political agreement on the comprehensive ceasefire in Syria is not reached, Idlib may become second Aleppo," de Mistura said following a meeting with French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault in Paris.
