Four Injured in Attack on Convoy of Evacuees in Syria's Aleppo – Ankara

A convoy attempting to evacuate people from Syria's eastern Aleppo was attacked Thursday with four people being injured, the Turkish Foreign Ministry's press secretary said.

ANKAR (Sputnik) – He said that the situation in Aleppo remained difficult, adding that he did not know where the militants would go after leaving Aleppo.

"Today evacuation began in accordance with the agreements that were achieved yesterday. We expected that everything would be all right but we have already got information about an attack on the first convoy and, according to preliminary data, four people have been injured. That is very alarming. But the agreement was restored again and we hope that the evacuation will resume. First of all it is necessary to evacuate injured, sick civilians from Aleppo, then – moderate opposition members," Huseyin Muftuoglu said at a briefing in Ankara.

"Turkey that shelters more than 3 million of refugees has all the necessary infrastructure for refugees. Turkish hospitals can receive sick and injured Aleppo citizens. But we want civilians from Aleppo to stay in their home country," Muftuoglu said.

Over the recent months, Aleppo became a major battleground in Syria between government forces and militants. On Tuesday, the Russian reconciliation center said that the Syrian government army was controlling over 98 percent of the territory of Aleppo, with militants present in less than 3 square kilometers (1.1 square mile).
