Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Javad Zarif discussed in a phone call on Wednesday the situation in war-torn Syria, including the delivery of humanitarian aid to Aleppo, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Lavrov and Zarif also discussed the fight against Daesh and al-Nusra Front terrorists in Syria.

"The sides continued the discussion of the situation in Syria, focusing on the elimination of Daesh and al-Nusra Front terrorists and their supporters, as well as on efforts to resolve the humanitarian crisis in the country, including the delivery of humanitarian relief to Aleppo residents," the ministry said in a statement.

Since 2012, Aleppo, formerly the largest city in Syria, has been heavily involved in the conflict between the government forces and militants, which led to the city eventually divided into the western districts held by the government and regularly attacked by the militants holding on to the eastern districts.

On Tuesday, the Russian reconciliation center said that the Syrian government army was controlling over 98 percent of the territory of Aleppo, with militants present in less than 1 square mile of the city's territory.
