MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The war in Syria has led to millions of people, men, women and children leaving their homes and going to countries such as Lebanon, Jordan and Europe. Many of those who have left war-torn Syria are families, with young children, who have been wounded psychologically by the conflict.
"It will probably be surprising to you, but some people with a relatively good financial position, enabling them to provide for themselves abroad, recently — last or this year — returned to Syria… Few return, the the process has begun," Assad said in an interview with the Rossiya 24 and NTV television channels.
"I am convinced that after the war, most of those who left will return home. Most of them left the country not because they were against the authorities. They left for two reasons: the first one is due to a direct terrorist threat, the second — the lack of housing for themselves and their families," he said.
"A huge part of these citizens support the state, and I am convinced they will come back. We have no doubt," Assad said.
