MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Syrian government forces liberated on Wednesday the Sukkari district of eastern Aleppo, one of the last neighborhoods in the embattled city remaining under control of terrorists, the Russian center for Syrian reconciliation said.

"As a result, the total area controlled by terrorists has shrunk to 2.5 square kilometers," the center said in a statement.

In Syria, the protests resulted in clashes between the government forces and opposition. Since then, the Middle Eastern country has been mired in a war, which involves Syrian army, numerous opposition factions, as well as terrorist groups, and which has resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties. International community, including Russia and Jordan have undertaken a number of steps to settle the conflict.
