ANKARA (Sputnik) — Turkish aviation destroyed nine Daesh targets in the course of operation near the city of al-Bab in the north of Syria, Turkey's General Staff said in a statement Wednesday.

"As a result of air strikes conducted on December 6 between 21:12-21:54 [19:12-19:54 GMT] in al-Bab area four shelters, three outposts, a command center and a tank, all belonging to the Daesh terrorists. After successfully carrying out the tasks, the planes returned to the base," the statement obtained by RIA Novosti read.

On August 24, Turkish forces, backed by US-led coalition aircraft, began a military operation dubbed the Euphrates Shield to clear the Syrian border town of Jarabulus and the surrounding area of the Daesh. As Jarabulus was retaken, the joint forces of Ankara, the coalition and Syrian rebels continued the offensive southwest.

The operation has been widely criticized both by the Syrian Kurds and Damascus, who have accused Ankara of violating Syria's territorial integrity.

An ongoing conflict between government and opposition parties in Syria has been exacerbated by the resurgence of the Islamic State terrorist organization, banned in Russia and many other countries, that managed to grab large swaths of land in Syria and neighboring Iraq.
