The Syrian Armed Forces along with patriotic militias on Wednesday are conducting an offensive in the eastern part of Aleppo controlled by militants toward the city's airport, Lebanese Al Manar TV channel reported.

DAMASCUS (Sputnik) — The government troops and their allies entered the eastern Aleppo's district of Karam Turab located in the vicinity of the airport.

The media outlet added that the artillery of the forces loyal to Damascus were shelling the militants' positions in Bab Nairab district, where the highway to the airport is located.

The situation in Aleppo has been seriously deteriorating over the recent months. Thousands of civilians are trapped in the terrorist-besieged eastern parts of Aleppo with no access to food or water. There have been several attempts to establish a ceasefire, however the bids have failed.

Earlier in the day, Lt. Gen. Sergei Rudskoy, the chief of the Russian General Staff Main Operational Directorate said that the Syrian army, supported by local militia, have managed to liberate 16 districts in the northern part of Eastern Aleppo during the last three days.
