Syrian authorities welcome Egypt's efforts aimed at settling the Syrian conflict, Syrian Ambassador to Russia Riyad Haddad said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Egypt makes mediation efforts to ensure coordination between the United Nations and the Syrian authorities to evacuate the wounded, and help deliver humanitarian assistance to the areas of war-torn Aleppo as a part of the overall Egyptian vision of the Syrian crisis settlement, which provides for the emergency assistance to the Syrian population, a comprehensive ceasefire in Syria, as well as the resumption of talks to reach a political solution to the ongoing crisis.

"We expect a positive role of Egypt in solving the Syrian crisis, we welcome any Egypt’s efforts to end it. We look at its role in a positive way," Haddad said at a press conference organized by the Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency.

Syria's civil war between government forces and a wide range of insurgents, including opposition groups and jihadist organizations, such as Islamic State and Jabhat Fatah al Sham, both outlawed in Russia, has raged for some five years and has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.

Over recent months, Aleppo has been a battlefield between government forces, jihadists, and numerous opposition groups. Militant-held eastern Aleppo is encircled by government forces and the fighting has affected thousands of civilians still trapped in the city.
