Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan considers Fethullah Gulen to take part in funding the election campaign of US Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

ANKARA (Sputnik) – The movement of Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, suspected by Ankara of masterminding the July coup attempt in Turkey, took part in funding the election campaign of US Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

"What sources were used to finance her [Clinton’s] election campaign? Fethullahist Terrorist Organization [Gulen's movement], which we fight against in Turkey, was one of those structures which provided them [the US Democratic party] with considerable support," Erdogan said in an interview with the Israeli television channel Arutz 2 on Monday.

Erdogan stressed that US President-elect Donald Trump conducted his election campaign at the expense of his own funds. According to Erdogan, Trump’s victory marked the beginning of a new stage for the United States and the US protests were the manifestations of disrespect for democracy.

On July 15, an attempted coup took place in Turkey and was suppressed the following day. Over 240 people were killed during the coup attempt and an estimated 2,000 were wounded. Ankara has accused Gulen and his movement, outlawed in Turkey, of playing a key role in the coup. Gulen has denied the accusations.

On November 8, Trump managed to come ahead of Clinton in the US presidential elections, securing at least 290 electoral votes despite most of the analysts and opinion polls predicting his defeat.
