Gulf States Launch Military Operation in Yemen (442)

The Saudi-led coalition has registered at least 180 violations of a 48-hour ceasefire in Yemen by the country's opposition Houthi movement over the first 10 hours of the truce, media reported Sunday citing a spokesman for the coalition.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Saturday, the coalition backing the Yemeni government announced the 48-hour ceasefire in the crisis-torn country. The ceasefire started at noon local time (09:00 GMT). However soon after its start, media reported that the both sides had violated the truce.

The coalition had registered 180 ceasefire violations, including 30 in the area near the Saudi-Yemeni border, Gen. Ahmed Asiri told the Al Jazeera broadcaster.

Asiri added that the southwestern Yemeni city of Taiz had also been repeatedly shelled.

Yemen has been engulfed in a violent conflict between the government headed by Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and the Houthis, who are backed by army units loyal to former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Since March 2015, the Saudi-led coalition of mostly Persian Gulf countries has been carrying out airstrikes against the rebels.
