ANKARA (Sputnik) — Turkish Foreign Ministry will approve the candidacy of an ambassador to Israel following a six-year break in diplomatic relations after the same procedure is completed by Tel Aviv, a source in the Turkish Foreign Ministry told RIA Novosti.

"Israeli Foreign Ministry has launched the process of appointing an ambassador to our country. It is expected that after his candidacy is approved, after a request for mutual agreement [approval of ambassador by receiving state], the process of appointing the ambassadors will be finished shortly," the source said.

Earlier in the day, media reported that the post of Israeli ambassador to Turkey was offered to Eitan Na’eh, the deputy ambassador to the United Kingdom and former ambassador to Azerbaijan. The candidacy that has been vacant since 2010 needs to be approved by the government of Israel.

Relations between Israel and Turkey deteriorated after the Freedom Flotilla incident in 2010, when a convoy of six ships, including one under Turkey's flag, tried to approach the Gaza Strip with humanitarian aid and activists on board. The flotilla was blocked and stormed by Israeli forces, resulting in nine Turkish citizens being killed.

In June, Israel and Turkey signed a deal to restore ties. Israel also made a formal apology for the raid, paid Turkey $20 million in compensation for it and agreed to ease the blockade on the Gaza Strip.
