The first train carrying aid for the citizens of war-torn Syria went by the recently-restored railway from the port of Tartus to the town of Jableh.

LATAKIA (Sputnik) — The Russian experts helped to restore some 65 kilometers (40 miles) of the railway.

“Some 27 tons of humanitarian aid have been delivered by sea. It was then reloaded to the train and would go to Jableh, where citizens mostly affected by the military actions will receive it,” representative of the Russian reconciliation center in Syria Alexander Gubanov said.

The railway infrastructure in Syria has been severely damaged amid continuing fighting between the government forces, terrorist groups and the opposition.

After the restoration of the railway, citizens in Jableh will today receive meet, fish, water, sugar, rice, and other food essential for their survival.

The ongoing violence in Syria has caused a large-scale humanitarian crisis and claimed the lives of thousands of people and displaced millions more. The international community, including the United Nations, has undertaken steps to end the Syrian conflict and to improve the humanitarian situation in the Middle Eastern country.
