MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Iraqi security forces killed over 1,100 Islamic State (ISIL or Daesh) fighters and recaptured hundreds of miles of land as the advance against the Daesh stronghold from the south continued on Tuesday, Iraqi Interior Ministry spokesman, Col. Saad Moen said.

Iraqi troops killed 778 Daesh members in the "southern axis," while Iraqi warplanes dropped bombs on 375 militants, Moen was quoted by Iraqi News as saying.

The offensive helped liberate 895 miles of land in the surrounding Nineveh province, the ministerial spokesman added.

The Iraqi push to drive Islamists out of their main stronghold has recently met fierce resistance. The armed forces are receiving air support from a US-led international coalition, which reportedly killed further 149 Daesh members on Tuesday.
