The US-led coalition against Daesh has carried out massive airstrikes in the operation to retake the Iraqi city of Mosul from the terror group, the US presidential envoy to the coalition, Brett McGurk, said on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — McGurk was traveling to Erbil to meet with US, Iraqi and Kurdish officials coordinating the Mosul campaign.

"Massive coalition airstrikes today on Mosul fronts," McGurk said in a Twitter post. "Also supporting the Peshmerga and people of Kirkuk [to] wipe out infiltrating Daesh cells."

Earlier on Friday, Daesh militants launched an attack on several locations in the northern city of Kirkuk, about 110 miles from Mosul.

Kirkuk’s governor said police repelled the attack and militants did not capture any government buildings.

About 30,000 Iraqi soldiers and 4,000 Kurdish Peshmerga fighters are reported to be taking part in the Mosul operation, backed by artillery and airstrikes carried out by the US-led international coalition.
