MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Iran wants to play a more active role in the Asian economic development and is striving to become a new transport hub connecting Asia and Europe, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Monday.

"Having secured the historic nuclear accord, the Islamic Republic of Iran is eager to participate actively in the value chain as well as develop new markets and provide secure supply of energy and consequently play an even more active role in Asian collaborations… Iran aims to play a more active role in the Asian-European transportation network. By developing its capacities, Iran is seeking to become a new hub in rail, air and sea transportation in West Asia," Rouhani said addressing the second Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) Summit in Thailand.

Iran has been restoring its cooperation with the rest of the world after in January the European Union, the United Nations, and partially the United States lifted their sanctions against the Islamic Republic after the International Atomic Energy Agency verified Tehran’s compliance with a nuclear agreement reached in July 2015.

The ACD is an inter-governmental organization established in 2002 to promote different kinds of cooperation between the Asian states. It comprises 34 nations, including Russia and Iran.
