The sappers are braving the streets of Aleppo, clearing residential neighborhoods. Time is of the essence because humanitarian convoys of food and medicine pass through the area.
The militants have left behind a lot of improvised booby-traps, so the sappers are examining the area with the help of metal detectors. Unfortunately, the ground is strewn with shell fragments and pieces of metal, making it especially difficult to get the job done.
Earlier, the Palestinian refugee camp Handarat on the north-eastern outskirts of the city became the first area in Aleppo to be liberated from Islamist control in two years.
The area was retaken by the Syrian Army three weeks ago.
