Washington should be held accountable for the US coalition's attack on Syrian government troops near the eastern city of Deir ez-Zor, a Lebanese politician opined.

MOSCOW(Sputnik) — The United States must be called to account for the recent bombing of the Syrian government’s army positions which was in violation of its deal with Russia, an adviser to the Lebanese Democratic Party leader told Sputnik.

"They [US] have no rights absolutely to bomb the Syrian army," Dr. Saleem Hamadeh said. "That is why we can say that this is a violation of the agreement and the Americans, I think, should be [held] responsible and accountable for this."

US warplanes hit Syrian government troops near the eastern city of Deir ez-Zor on September 17, leaving 62 military personnel killed and a hundred wounded. The Pentagon said initially that the airstrike was a mistake and targeted Daesh militants.

The attack on government positions put to test a US-Russia brokered nationwide ceasefire that came into being in Syria earlier that week. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said last Friday it was necessary to separate Daesh terrorists from "moderate" opposition forces in order to salvage the truce.
