MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Daesh prison guard head in Mosul Abu Omar was killed by the Iraqi army units in Anbar governorate, media said Saturday citing sources.
According to Fars news agency, Omar was killed late Friday.
"[Four] senior Daesh [IS] commanders, including two Saudi nationals were killed in al-Baghdadi region in Anbar province when they came under the Iraqi forces' attack on the terrorist group's military base," local militia commander Qatri Obeidi said, as quoted by the agency.
It has been reported by the media that Omar fled Mosul after previous Iraqi forces' attack.
Mosul is Iraq’s second-biggest city and capital of the northwestern province of Ninawa. It has been occupied by the Daesh since June 2014 and declared the Iraqi capital of the Islamic State’s so-called caliphate.
The Daesh is outlawed in many countries, including Russia and the United States.
