The Israeli military has intercepted two projectiles fired from Syrian territory, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Saturday.

TEL AVIV (Sputnik) — The shelling is unlikely to be intentional and is similar to previous incidents when fighting between rival Syrian factions resulted in mortar shells and rockets landing on Israeli territory, the IDF press service said.

"A short while ago a projectile fired from Syria was intercepted by the Iron Dome aerial defense system. No injuries were reported," the IDF said in its official twitter account.

An additional projectile was intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system a short while later, according to the IDF.

The IDF did not specify any retaliatory measures. Similar previous incidents resulted in retaliation by Israeli military aircraft. On Tuesday, the Israel Air Force (IAF) attacked Syrian artillery positions in the Golan Heights amid a sharp rise in cross-border shooting incidents.

Hostilities between Israeli and Syrian forces escalated early Tuesday after the Syrian military said it had downed an Israeli warplane and a drone in retaliation for the latest airstrikes.
