Putin, Netanyahu Discuss Possibility of Direct Israeli-Palestinian Talks
21:29 GMT 15.09.2016 (Updated: 01:41 GMT 16.09.2016) Russian President Vladimir Putin has discussed the Palestinian-Israeli conflict with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, particularly the possibility of holding direct dialogue between the conflicting sides, the Kremlin informs.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – According to the Kremlin press service, Putin and Netanyahu agreed it's important to maintain contacts at various levels.
"An exchange of opinions continues on the current situation in the Middle East region. The situation with regard to the Palestinian-Israeli settlement was touched upon, including the prospect of resuming direct dialogue between the parties."

Palestinians seek diplomatic recognition for their independent state on the territories of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, which is partially occupied by Israel, and the Gaza Strip. Israel has been building settlements on the occupied territories despite objection from the United Nations.
The most recent round of peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians was initiated by the United States in mid-2013 but ended in an impasse almost a year later.
Palestinian Ambassador to Russia Abdel Hafiz Nofal told Sputnik on Thursday that Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas was going to raise the question of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict during his speech at the UN General Assembly in September.
