Turkish Journalists Slam Ankara for Muzzling Voice of Press After Coup Attempt

Several associations of Turkish journalists criticized Ankara for muzzling the voice of press.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Crackdown on media carried out by the Turkish government in the wake of the failed coup violates freedom of information, a statement released by the country's journalists associations on Friday said.

"The media in Turkey opposed the coup attempt, but freedom of information is being violated 55 days after the attempt in the state of emergency," the statement said, as quoted by the Hurriyet newspaper.

According to the statement signed by the Turkish Journalists Association, the Journalists Union of Turkey and Basin-Is union (Union of Turkish Press Workers), the government has apprehended or arrested 307 journalists and left over 2,000 media workers unemployed due to a large-scale shutdown of news outlets over the past two months.

Over 40,000 people have already been detained in Turkey in connection with the coup attempt which took place on July 15 and was suppressed the following day.
