The United Nations managed to deliver humanitarian aid to three out of 18 besieged areas in Syria in August.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — As little as three besieged areas of Syria out of 18 have been reached by the United Nations' humanitarian aid in August, Senior Adviser to UN Special Envoy for Syria Jan Egeland said Thursday.

"Today is the first of September and this was a stocktaking meeting in many ways on what we have achieved in August and we were only able to reach three of the 18 besieged areas [in Syria]," Egeland told reporters.

Syrian Envoy to UN: Turkish Troops Provide Terrorists in Syrian Aleppo With Arms
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups. On February 27, a US-Russia brokered ceasefire came into force in Syria. Terrorist groups, which maintain a heavy presence in Aleppo, are not part of the deal.

The UN humanitarian task force "failed" to provide relief to the people of the Damascus outskirt of Darayya over four years, Egeland said.

"The task force failed in Darayya, the people of Darayya. We all failed the people of Darayya."
