At least 40 Taliban militants were killed and 45 were wounded as a result of an airstrike in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province, local media reported Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The airstrike took place in Marja district of the province on Monday night after the Afghan Air Force targeted the insurgents, the TOLOnews channel said, citing the provincial governor's statement.

Fourteen vehicles belonging to the militants were also destroyed, the broadcaster added.

Afghanistan is in a state of political and social turmoil, fighting the continuing Taliban insurgency, with other extremist groups such as Daesh, expanding their activities in the country as well.
