The Kremlin spokesman described situation in the Syrian city of Aleppo as being "extremely tense."

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The situation in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo has greatly intensified, Russian president’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday.

"I know there have been significant efforts to carry out the humanitarian operation in Aleppo. The humanitarian situation there is quite dramatic, and the whole situation in Aleppo remains extremely tense," Peskov told reporters.

The spokesman said he was not in a position to give details of the Russian Defense Ministry’s relief operation, which involves opening safe passage for hundreds of thousands of civilians trapped in eastern Aleppo as well as militants willing to lay down arms.

Russian Foreign Ministry Rules Out Offensive on Syria's Aleppo
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups.

Aleppo is partially controlled by Jabhat Fatah al Sham (previously known as the al-Nusra Front), a terrorist group outlawed in Russia and other countries along with Daesh.

On Tuesday, terrorists used chemical weapons in the city killing at least five civilians.
