MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Syrian President Bashar Assad reaffirms his adherence to achieving a political settlement in the country with the help of UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said Friday.
"It is important that President of the Syrian Arab Republic Bashar Assad confirm his devotion to the political settlement in the country, including within the framework of efforts by Special Envoy of the UN secretary-general for Syria Staffan de Mistura," Antonov told reporters.
The deputy minister added that Assad had already sent an invitation for a meeting to the deputy special envoy of the UN secretary-general for Syria, Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy, who was planning to visit Damascus in a few days to discuss crisis resolution.
