Members of the Daesh jihadist group are fleeing from the Huwayjah district of Kirkuk province of Iraq amid a military operation launched by the country's army, media reported Sunday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Kirkuk province is the richest in oil region of Iraq. Part of the province as well as other large territories in northern and western Iraq, including the country’s second biggest city of Mosul, were seized by the Daesh terror group in 2014.

"Some of [the terrorists] shaved beards and went to remote areas outside Al Huwayjah and also to the neighboring villages in the area of Al Zab amid [Iraqi] military's advance," a source told Alsumaria broadcaster.

The source noted that, thereby, Daesh has lost almost a half of its members in Huwayjah.

Daesh is outlawed in Russia and numerous other countries throughout the world.
