Daesh, outlawed in Russia and numerous other countries, attacked positions of the Syrian army and militia southeast of Hama province, a member of the local militia said Thursday.

BEIRUT (Sputnik) — According to him, before the attack Daesh sent a vehicle laden with explosives to the checkpoint. The car was destroyed before it had reached the Syrian forces. The jihadists used mortars and machine gun in the course of the attack.

"Terrorist attacked the positions of army and militia on the Salamiyah-Hama highway. This is a southeastern part in Hama. The fight is underway," he told RIA Novosti.

Syria has been mired in a civil war since 2011, with the Syrian army fighting numerous opposition factions and Islamic extremist groups.
