WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The State Department also noted that its ability to assist US citizens in Libya is extremely limited as the US Embassy’s operations remain suspended in that country.
"The Department of State warns US citizens against all travel to Libya and recommends that US citizens currently in Libya depart immediately," the release stated. "The security situation in Libya remains unpredictable and unstable, and extremist groups continue to plan terrorist attacks against US interests."
The State Department cautioned Americans currently in Libya to make "contingency emergency plans" and "maintain security awareness at all times."
Furthermore, the Libyan government has no control over much of the country’s territory, and that law enforcement may have limited to no capacity to respond, according to the State Department.
"Crime levels remain high, including the threat of kidnapping, and various groups have called for attacks against US citizens and US interests in Libya," it explained. "Foreigners may be targeted by violent extremist groups seeking to injure, kidnap or kill anyone associated with the United States."
The State Department also warned US Marines to stay vigilant when transiting in or near Libyan territorial waters, and advised vessels to proceed cautiously when approaching all Libyan oil terminals and ports.
Moreover, militia groups have supplanted law enforcement in maintaining internal security throughout Libya and may operate checkpoints between major cities or detain travelers for unclear reasons without access to a lawyer, or even the ability to inform others of their detention.
