Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan tasked Sunday Binali Yildirim, the newly-elected head of the ruling party, to form the country’s new government, his administration said.

ANKARA (Sputnik) – Earlier in the day, Turkish Transport Minister Yildirim was elected new chair of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) at its extraordinary convention.

"The president tasked Binali Yildirim with forming the 65th government of the Republic of Turkey and wished him luck," the statement read.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu resigned. He resigned from the post of the AKP leader earlier this month.
