Thirteen Iranian soldiers have been killed in recent days in clashes with extremist militants in Syria, media reported Saturday, citing an Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) spokesman.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The clashes left 21 other soldiers with the IRGC wounded, Hossein Ali Rezayi added, as cited by the ISNA news agency.

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups. A ceasefire brokered by the United States and Russia came into force across the country on February 27, however it excludes terrorist groups such as al-Nusra Front and Daesh, both of which are outlawed in Russia.

Since late 2011, Iranian soldiers have been fighting alongside Syrian government forces. According to Iranian media reports, over 400 Iranian army personnel have been killed in the fighting in Syria since the start of the conflict.
