Israel stroke two Hamas military targets in the Gaza Strip's south on Saturday in response to Palestinian rocket fire, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement reportedly launched a rocket that hit the Israeli southern regional council of Eshkol. No injuries or damage have been reported.

"The IDF will not tolerate terrorists opening fire onto Israeli territory and will continue to act severely against any attempt to disturb the peace of [its] communities," the IDF said, as quoted by The Jerusalem Post newspaper.

Tensions on the Gaza border have strained over the past week. On Thursday, the Israeli forces discovered a secret cross-border tunnel in Gaza leading to Israel. According to the military, over the last three days Hamas has attacked Israeli forces at least 12 times. Israeli forces have in turn responded with tank fire and carried out four airstrikes.

On Friday, the Israeli Air Force struck multiple targets in the Gaza Strip in response to the continued mortar assault on IDF forces earlier that day.
