    Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Standoff Continues (463)

The Israel Defense Forces attacked a Hamas site in Gaza in response to mortar fire, the IDF said.

TEL AVIV (Sputnik) — Israeli forces carried out airstrikes on suspected Hamas targets in Gaza after continued cross-border fire, the Israeli military said Friday.

On Thursday, Israeli forces discovered a secret cross-border tunnel in Gaza leading to Israel. According to the military, over the last three days Hamas has attacked Israeli forces at least 12 times. Israeli forces have in turn responded with tank fire and carried out four airstrikes.

In the summer of 2014, a two-month Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip, dubbed Operation Protective Edge, led to the deaths of an estimated 2,200 Palestinians and 72 Israelis.

Israel imposed a blockade on the Gaza Strip in 2007, after Hamas won control of the exclave following a decisive victory over the Fatah party in the Palestinian legislative election the year before.
