US Unsupportive of Safe Zones in Syria - White House
17:18 GMT 02.05.2016 (Updated: 10:55 GMT 06.08.2022) US President Barack Obama does not believe that safe zones in Syria are a practical alternative to what currently is happening in the region, according to White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US administration of President Barack Obama does not support the idea of establishing safe zones in Syria amid the ongoing conflict, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said in a briefing on Monday.
"The president [Obama] does not believe at this point that safe zones are a practical alternative to what currently is happening in Syria," Earnest stated.
The press secretary reiterated the Obama administration’s position amid the ongoing effort to refresh the ceasefire agreement in Syria.
A ceasefire hammered out by Moscow and Washington has been in place in parts of Syria since late February. UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said last week that the truce was barely holding and urged the two powers to save the peace process.
Russia's top diplomat Sergei Lavrov and his US counterpart John Kerry on Monday discussed political settlement in Syria and agreed on further steps the two countries would take as co-chairs of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG), the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
