MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The attacked checkpoint lies on a strategic highway that connects Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, near an Israeli settlement of Beit Horon, deemed illegal by the UN.
Two women approached the roadblock asking for water, the Haaretz newspaper reported, citing Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). One of them pulled out a knife and tried to stab an IDF service member, but was shot.
The second woman fled into the bushes and was arrested. The outlet said they were also carrying a syringe and a suicide note. The wounded woman was taken to a hospital.
Stabbing attacks by Palestinians have been on the rise since last year when tensions between Israel and residents in the occupied lands escalated after an Israeli security operation in Jerusalem.
