ANKARA (Sputnik) – A 55-year-old woman was killed by an armored car while crossing the street in the Yenisehir district of the de-facto Kurdish capital of Diyarbakir earlier in the day, according the Hurriyet daily.

Local residents gathered immediately after the incident, throwing stones at the vehicle and voicing anti-government slogans, the outlet added. Law enforcement officials have been dispatched to the scene of the accident to investigate the deadly collision.

Clashes that broke out last summer between the Turkish government and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a pro-independence organization Ankara designates as a terrorist group, reportedly claimed the lives of over 350 soldiers and police officers and over 5,000 Kurdish insurgents.
