The US-led coalition carried out 23 airstrikes against Daesh insurgents in Iraq on Tuesday, targeting the group’s tactical units, mortar systems, assembly areas and more, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Coalition forces in Iraq launched the airstrikes near 11 cities, destroying Daesh tunnel systems, as well as several fighting positions and assembly areas, according to CENTCOM.

"In Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted 23 strikes coordinated with and in support of the Government of Iraq using bomber, ground-attack, fighter, and remotely piloted aircraft against ISIL targets," the release said on Wednesday.

Near Mosul, the coalition destroyed two Daesh rocket rails and suppressed a heavy machine gun used by the group. A separate strike near Hit destroyed a Daesh anti-aircraft artillery piece.

CENTCOM did not detail any actions carried out by the coalition against Daesh in Syria.

Last week, the US administration announced that Washington will send 217 military personnel to assist local forces in retaking Daesh stronghold of Mosul. On Monday, the administration said it will send an additional 250 US troops to help local forces in Syria fight the terror group.

The US-led coalition of more than 60 nations has been carrying out airstrikes in Syria and Iraq against Daesh since the summer of 2014.
