Ordinary Syrians did not think twice before scrambling to take selfies with the country's President and First Lady during the couple's surprise visit to a Damascus culture center.

Syrian President Bashar Assad and First Lady Asma Assad paid a surprise visit to a culture center in Damascus, in what immediately prompted citizens to start taking selfies with the couple, Sputnik's Arabic edition reported.

The couple's visit there took place on April 23, when reports emerged that Tehran had allegedly offered Assad and his family asylum in Iran from where he could safely command his army, but that Assad had refused to leave his country.
