The Syrian army is now capable of launching a "serious" offensive, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in the phone-in with the nation on Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Syrian army is now capable of launching a "serious" offensive with the help of the Russian air force.

"I want to draw your attention to the fact that we have pulled out a significant part of our armed group [from Syria], but the Syrian army we left behind is now in such a condition that it can conduct serious offensive operations with the help of our remaining forces," Putin said at the annual event.

On March 14, President Putin ordered a withdrawal of most of Russia's military contingent from Syria after saying that it had accomplished its objective, while leaving a minor residual force.
