The European Union and Italy in particular are convinced that Iran may return to playing important "geopolitical and strategic role in the region and not only in the region" after the sanctions lift, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said Wednesday.

ROME (Sputnik) — Renzi added that the nuclear deal allows Iran to "send a message of stability across the entire region," stressing the significance of Tehran influence in the Middle East peace process.

The prime minister is currently in Tehran with an official two-day visit.

In January, the European Union, the United Nations and the United States lifted its sanctions from Iran following the implementation of the Tehran's obligations under the nuclear deal signed with six world powers to ensure the peaceful nature of its nuclear program.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani visited Italy in late January as part of his first European tour in 17 years. The visit resulted in signing of numerous business contracts worth between $17 billion and $19.4 billion, according to various estimates.
