Russian Airstrikes Thwart Nusra Front Attacks Near Syria's Aleppo
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The number of al-Nusra Front militants in the Syrian northwestern city of Aleppo has been increasing, the Russian center for Syrian reconciliation at the Hmeymim airbase said Wednesday.

"Reports on the increase in the number of al-Nusra Front groups active in the city of Aleppo have been received via the hotline of the reconciliation center. According to the received information, a detachment of over 90 people has arrived from the Bshantara settlement to the Ashraf quarter. The situation demonstrates the terrorists might be preparing to full-scale attack," the center said in a statement.

Syria has been mired in civil war since March 2011, with government forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups, including al-Nursa Front, outlawed in many countries including Russia.

Aleppo, the largest city in Syria, was attacked by al-Nusra Front militants in 2012. Since then, Syrian government forces have been fighting for the city.
